Description: The Adverse Childhood Experiences Study is perhaps the largest of its kind. Evidence from this extensively published research project will be presented along with proposals for addiction evaluation, treatment and policy. View evidence which demonstrate that, 1. ACEs are common, threatening, and often denied; 2. ACEs have a profound effect even 50 years later on addiction, health risks, diseases, and death; and 3. This combination makes ACEs the leading determinant of the health and social well-being of the nation and the major factor underlying addictions. In this presentation, we will review some of the evidence and discuss implications for evaluation, treatment, and policy. The presenter will also add her own theories on treatment and present a theoretical overview of Strategic Trauma and Abuse Recovery© which she developed for her dissertation.  S.T.A.R. Is a structured 3 phase process which is spiritually informed  and involves both psychoeducation components and  emotional processing.

Goals and Objectives: Through slide presentation, lecture, & discussion participants should be able to:

1. Identify at least 3 general outcomes of the ACE study which impact our understanding of the origins of behavioral health issues.

2. Identify the 3 reasons it is important to consider the links between adverse childhood experiences and adult behavioral health issues.

3. Identify one factor that differentiates the source-focused approach to trauma and abuse recovery from other treatment models.
